The leaves are turning, the evenings are getting cozy, and there’s plenty going on close to home. Whether you love a good card game, a classic movie or learning something brand new, here are seven easy ways to get out, meet people and have some fun this fall.

1. Deal yourself in at cards and games
Euchre, bridge, cribbage, canasta, mahjong, Scrabble and bingo: the Port Hope 55+ Membership Program at the Town Park Recreation Centre has a game for just about everyone. Never played bridge? They even offer a session to learn and get coached.
2. Catch a free classic movie
The Cobourg Public Library shows free classic films on Monday and Friday afternoons at 2:00 pm, from September to June. Bring a friend, settle in and enjoy an old favourite on the big screen.
3. Join a book club (or a cookbook club!)
The Cobourg library’s Boomers Book Club picks a different author each month, and you can read any book by that author. Love to cook? The Cookbook Club has a monthly food theme: try a recipe at home, then bring it along to share. Delicious and social.
4. Pick up the needles
Knitters and crocheters, there’s a circle for you. The Needle Nuts Yarn Circle meets Monday mornings at the Cobourg library, and Port Hope’s 55+ program has a Knitting Circle too. Bring your current project, or work on one for a local organization.
5. Learn the ukulele
Always wanted to play an instrument? The ukulele is small, cheerful and friendly for beginners. Port Hope’s 55+ program offers ukulele lessons for new and continuing players. You might be strumming a tune sooner than you think.
6. Move at your own pace

From tai chi and table tennis to Nordic pole walking, Port Hope’s 55+ program has gentle and active options for every level. It’s a great way to keep moving and meet new friends at the same time.
7. Drop by your local Legion
Royal Canadian Legion branches are friendly community hubs, and many host social nights, games and dinners. Check with your local branch to see what’s on: Cobourg (Branch 133), Port Hope (Branch 30), Brighton (Branch 100) and Colborne (Branch 187).
Good to know: Schedules, fees and programs can change, so it’s a good idea to call ahead or check the organization’s website before you go. Port Hope’s 55+ program is for adults 55 and over and needs a yearly membership; call the Town Park Recreation Centre at 905-885-7908 for details. For Cobourg library programs, call 905-372-9271.
