From a night of dinner and laughs in Cobourg to candlelight, carols and not one but two Santa Claus parades, November is a great month to get out and enjoy Northumberland County. Here’s what’s coming up.

On now until November 8

The Northumberland Players are serving up a comedy with dinner. In Hurry Hard by Kristen Da Silva, Bill and Sandy have split up, and so has their curling team. When the men’s team is a player short on the day of the big Regional Bonspiel, Bill has to ask his ex-wife to step in. It’s a warm, funny story about love and small-town Ontario, and you don’t need to know a thing about curling to enjoy it.

🕯️ Port Hope Candlelight Festival Kick-Off

Friday, November 27

Port Hope’s Candlelight Festival is the official start of the holiday season downtown, and opening night is a real treat. Expect a street party, an outdoor artisan market, late-night shopping, live ice sculpting, fire performers and projection art, all ending with a candlelit walk and the lighting of the park.

  • 4 to 9 p.m.: street party, outdoor artisan market and late shopping downtown
  • 6 p.m.: Candlelight Walk with a group carol sing, starting at Walton and Pine Streets
  • 6:30 p.m.: lighting ceremony in Memorial Park
  • Bring: a light for the walk and a non-perishable food donation for the Fare Share Food Bank

The festival runs until January 2, with the holiday light display in Memorial and Rotary Parks and downtown wagon rides on Saturdays in December.

🎅 Two Santa Claus Parades on Saturday, November 28

Port Hope’s parade is in the afternoon and Cobourg’s is in the evening, so you can catch both in one day.

Port Hope Santa Claus Parade: 1 p.m.

This year marks the parade’s 90th anniversary, with the theme “Retro Rewind.” The route runs along Ridout, Walton and Queen Streets, ending at Town Hall. The town notes the route may change because of construction on Victoria Street South, so check the Municipality of Port Hope website before you go.

Cobourg Santa Claus Parade: 6 p.m.

Cobourg’s evening parade has the theme “A Vintage Christmas,” with floats, lights, music and Santa’s arrival. The Northumberland Fare Share Food Bank will be collecting non-perishable food donations, and Canada Post elves will collect children’s letters to Santa at the start of the parade. Can’t make it out? The parade will be shown live on YourTV Northumberland (Cable 10, HD 700).
